Regularly published in professional journals and trade magazines world wide, George Massenburg received the Gold Medal from the Audio Engineering Society in 2008.īy combining smart software features with extreme sample detail and nuance, Superior Drummer 3īridges the gap between the “e” and the drums, making your electronic kit every bit as “real” and acoustic as it can be. In 1982, he founded George Massenburg Labs, an audio electronics company that has released an extensive range of innovative recording technologies, all based on his original designs. Initially, I chose to check out the brand-new 230GB library by triggering the sounds from an electronic kit essentially playing SD3 ‘live’. Further, George has designed, built and managed several recording studios as well as contributed to the acoustical and architectural design of many other studios, including George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound. I rarely program ‘real’ drums or use preset grooves, so there are areas of the new Superior Drummer that intrigue me more than others. In addition to numerous Mix Magazine TEC Awards, in 1988 he also won the Academy of Country Music Record of the Year Award for his production on the album “Trio” featuring Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
George’s work has gained him world wide recognition and four Grammy Awards, including the Grammy for Technical Achievement in 1998, at the time making him one of only seventeen individuals to ever receive this honor. His work includes milestone albums by Earth, Wind & Fire, Linda Ronstadt, Natasha Bedingfield, Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel, the Dixie Chicks and many, many more.

The software is technically very good and even the control panel dealing with download and installation works flawlessly.Over the past four decades, George Massenburg has been involved in over four hundred records. I got it into one of my song mixes already and it sounds incredible, it’s really a game changer for me and I don’t regret the price which is very reasonable when you consider the men and means behind the project. The video where GM talks about the recording setup and the microphone placement plam make clear the boundless possibilities for sound sculpting. I spent 2 days with EZ and then upgraded to SD3 primarily for 24bit but after two days I’m really into how much you can do with this incredible sounding instrument. *Maybe Toontrack could change that in a future update? The confusion is caused by the tick which should really disappear* when the mixer is in a non default state. The menu PRESETS/MIXER always shows “default” as it’s only function seems to be to restore the mixer to clean default state if required.
That way you get to see how he did it and can even use the setup as a start point, modify and save that as a user preset. When you select any of the others (eg GEORGE MASSENBERG/PREMIER) the mixer comes up with the settings (eg) GM used to mix this particular kit (seemingly a favorite of his and I agree). If you select a clean kit (1st in the drop menu) then the mixer will come up… clean.
I am not sure I understand exactly what you mean but if you look at the attached screen shot, this is what your Preset menu should look if you have installed the Presets for SD3.
